Site Constraints & Environmental Factors

Nichols College sought to transition away from aging oil-fired campus heating to meet collegiate sustainability targets. The project had to be executed within a strict summer academic recess to avoid impacting campus student life, requiring rapid borehole completion and header vault tie-ins.

Engineering Execution

Turnkey Drilling & Subsurface Solution

GDNE deployed dual rotary drilling rigs operating concurrently to drill, loop, and grout the vertical closed-loop array. Each borehole was installed with IGSHPA-certified high-density polyethylene (HDPE 4710) U-bends and pressure-grouted from the bottom up with thermally enhanced bentonite grout. Underground headers were connected via certified electrofusion and butt-welding to an exterior pre-cast valve vault.

Verified Performance

Operational & Environmental Results

βœ“Displaced over 35,000 gallons of fuel oil annually with clean electric geothermal heat pump infrastructure.
βœ“Qualified for substantial Mass Save commercial custom decarbonization incentives.
βœ“Completely silent thermal operations adjacent to student dormitories and academic lecture halls.
βœ“Borefield completed and commissioned on-schedule prior to the start of the fall academic semester.
